My Favorite Things
Acupressure Mat
An acupressure mat (and pillow) might look like a modern day torture device to some, but in reality, it is a mat covered in spiky-like nodes that is meant as a tool for wellness.
Keep reading to find out the benefits of using an acupressure mat and why it’s one of my favorite things.
Benefits of Acupressure Mats
Acupressure is an ancient Chinese therapy practiced by many. But with an acupressure mat, you can experience many of the same benefits from the comforts of home.
Acupressure mats have plastic points meant to stimulate the skin, these mats never puncture the skin, but rather, put pressure on the body. You can use the mat to target various parts of the body, or on your back, as it is widely used, which aids in all around wellness.
Natural Pain Relief
Studies have found that using acupressure is effective for a variety of different types of pain.
Produces Endorphines
Endorphines help to reduce pain and produce a feeling of euphoria. Findings published in the IOSR Journal of Nursing and Health Science, showed that acupressure can stimulate the production of endorphins
Improves Sleep
Though there have been studies to show how acupressure is beneficial for improved sleep, I would like to personally attest to this. Especially when used before bed, my acupressure mat makes SUCH a huge difference in how I sleep and how I feel when I wake.
Positive Impact on Headaches & Migraines
Compared to muscle relaxant therapy, studies have found that acupressure was much more effective in helping with headaches and migraines.
Lowers High Blood Pressure
Though more research needs to be done, clinical trials have shown the impact of acupressure on patients with hypertension, and found that blood pressure was lowered for a period of at least 30 minutes.
Aids with Sports Injuries
It has been seen that using acupressure caused a decrease in pain scores in athletes with acute injuries but not anxiety levels. Acupressure could be effective in a sports setting, especially if there is limited access to medical care.
Improves Circulation
In 2007 it was found that acupressure significantly increased lower limb blood flow in patients with Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Diseases. Improved circulation is an all around mind & body benefit.
Muscle Relaxation
Though research is little, review upon review have stated that the use of an acupressure mat has shown significant muscle relaxation. The people have spoken!
Increases Energy Levels
Acupressure has been shown to help with fatigue and to increase energy levels. WooHoo!
Better Digestion
A strange benefit, you may be thinking. But acupressure has been shown to improve the quality of life for those suffering from digestion problems. Generally it has found that acupressure improves the wellbeing and quality of life of those suffering from constipation.
Manage Your Own Treatment
The ability to manage your own treatment is a pretty big benefit of using an acupressure mat if you ask me! Being able to carry it with me wherever I go, and using it as much or as little as needed, gets an acupressure mat a big thumbs up!
A Great Tool to Add to Your Wellness Kit
There are many different types of acupressure mats, all of varying price ranges, colors, and materials. But I can tell you that the few different brands I’ve used have all had their unique pressure points, designs, and structure, but all have been really great.
I use mine often, and every time, leave feeling refreshed, recharged, with happy feelings, and like I gave my body some love.
Don’t let the pressure points scare you. To some, they can at first, feel relatively irritating, but you will quickly become comfortable and invigorated once your skin and nerves become accustomed to the sensation. You will end up feeling like a whole new you!
“Whether you need to add some relaxation techniques to your life, are looking for ways to improve circulation and digestion, or help ease anxiety and tension, try considering an acupressure mat!”
